17. International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women
Abrakadabra

The annual International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women takes place at the beginning of October. Each year it invites between forty and sixty women artists and intellectuals, as well as attracts some six- to seven-thousand visitors from all walks of life.

In October, the city of Ljubljana will transform into the City of Women. The common denominator for artists and other guests, hosted in the spirit of this year’s festival motto – Abracadabra! – is the “magic” of the outlived and non-functional patriarchal patterns, socio-political conventions and moral and ethical norms and values that sometimes prefer something more abstract and elusive than an individual human being – namely, the “magical power” of religion, ideology and political beliefs, which can serve to liberate an individual or transform them into a tool for manipulation and enslavement in the name of consumerism, (neo)capitalism, religious fanatism, craving for money, lust for power, authority and control. A rich festival programme offering everything from concerts, exhibitions, children’s programme, dance performances, performances, lectures, workshops, discussion panels and meeting with the artists…
Abracadabra! Let the magic begin.

16. International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women
Between Past and Future

The annual International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women takes place at the beginning of October. Each year it invites between forty and sixty women artists and intellectuals, as well as attracts some six- to seven-thousand visitors from all walks of life.

This year’s edition of the City of Women Festival will address the topic Between Past & Future. The conceptual background relates to the eponymous book by Hannah Arendt who, back in the 1960’s, argued that the condition of human existence, robbed of the traditional, transcendental, religious and moral standards employed to bridge the abyss between past and future, lost direction. Artists and theoreticians with various views, experiences, approaches, backgrounds and cultural milieu will challenge audiences between 8th and 17th October with their reflections and responses to the relationship between past and future that we confront today.

15. International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women
Global South

The annual International Festival of Contemporary Arts – City of Women takes place at the beginning of October. Each year it invites between forty and sixty women artists and intellectuals, as well as attracts some six- to seven-thousand visitors from all walks of life.

The final year of this decade will see City of Women thematically approach the cultural constant of the South, which has been gaining increasing importance in the social, political, and cultural context of the 21st Century. The field of culture and art proved itself far from immune to the general trends of globalization due to a specific distribution of thought, moral standards, and ethical values. The distribution in question took place through information networks, which were monopolized by the prevailing type of culture. Despite this fact, what has nevertheless succeeded to coexists on the sidelines are certain artistic practices with a critical stance, contemplating the modern mutated vision of society, which abolishes history, differences, identities, and specifics. What remains to persist and insist is art, which reflects upon wider or merely local and violence-soaked images of the peripheral Global South. It is for this reason that we decided to invite artists from all artistic genres and many peripheral continents to participate in this year’s festival and thus contribute to the contemplative and discursive arena evolving around the issue of the Global South with their own discourse on political-social and cultural reality.

re.act.feminism – performance art of the 1960s and 70s today
Exhibition, video archive, live performances and conference

re.act.feminism – performance art of the 1960’s and 70’s today was an international performance and exhibition project exploring the “return” of feminist performance art of the 1960’s and 70’s in form of re-dos, reenactments, appropriations, new articulations, or archival and documentary projects. The exhibition, performance program and videoarchive featured more than 70 artists from two generations, providing an exemplary overview of gender-critical performance art of the 1960s and 70s in Europe and the USA, and investigating its resonances in current artistic productions. The curators’ intention was to extend the perspective beyond the canon of the known and familiar in order to demonstrate the diversity and complexity of (feminist) performative strategies. This included performance movements in Eastern and South Eastern Europe as well as the former GDR (since the beginning of the 1980s) which often developed parallel to and independent of ‘western art’.
